For the first time eight (8) Atlanta Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST) chapters united to increase awareness and encourage governmental intervention for the Darfur region of Sudan on Monday, March 19, 2007.
The March & Rally was sponsored by the Metro-Atlanta Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST), a national public service, non-profit organization.
The acronym Deltas S.T.A.N.D. means Support Taking Action Ending Destruction Modern Pyramids, Inc. was proud to help document some of the activities of the ladies from DST. Delta Sigma Theta provide services and programs focused on economic and educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement.
Atlanta members marched in solidarity with some of their other DST Georgia sorors at the state Capitol. Those in attendance participated in one of their annual nationwide political education programs - Delta Days. The collective group educated Georgia elected officials on the devastating effects of genocide on the African nation and empower them to 1) prioritize Darfur within U.S. foreign policy, 2) provide sufficient funding to cover costs related to peacekeeping and humanitarian relief aid efforts, and 3) impose sanctions on the Sudanese government if peacekeeping is not restored to the region. One of the highlights of the program was the youth component. Several representatives from DeKalb County high school art students benefited from the mentoring experience in social activism and justice.
Founded on January 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta's membership consists of over 200,000 predominately African-American, college-educated women with more than 900 chapters through out the world.
