The culmination of the Spring Appreciation Banquet for the Georgia Tech Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA) was the installation of new officers. The incoming President for 2007-2008 is Melody Johnson (above left) while Christopher Green (above right), 2006 - 2007 President is expected to receive his Ph. D in mechanical engineering during the summer of 2007.
The program began with a selection by a local Christain dance company. The GT BGSA Appreciation Banquet - Spring 2007 Program was an opportunity to recognize and extend congratulations to members of the Georgia Tech Black Graduate Student community.
The lifestyle of graduate studies for technical students is rigorous and demanding. The intense academic pressures to a) perform research, b) maintain awareness of the latest developments inside a specialized technical field, c) publish and present scholarly papers, d) assist demanding faculty advisors, and e) provide leadership to undergraduate technical students can be an undaunting and lonesome experience. BGSA fortunately provides encouragement and a supportive, nurturing environment for peer association.
Another highpoint of the evening was the graduate students want to give a token of appreciation to Mr. Richard Haley, Special Assistant to the President of Georgia Tech. Mr. Haley, a former IBM executive, who spearheaded the FOCUS program is retiring. Several heart-felt testimonials were made how Mr. Haley and the FOCUS made a significant positive impact in the successful matriculation of graduate technical students.
Dr. Reginald DesRoches is the faculty advisor to the Georgia Tech Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA). He led the transitional ceremonies for the BGSA officers.
The GT BGSA Appreciation Banquet - Spring 2007 Program was conducted in a very warm and friendly atmosphere. The celebration marked the conclusion of an academic year. Some members had won scholarships or funding for research projects. The spirit and mood was congratulatory. Some participants were excited because they were on the verge of obtaining academic goals which they had been pursuing for numerous years..
