Newsflash

One of the main highlights of the 2008 Homecoming of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) on October 23-25, 2008 was the 30th anniversary of the Xi Alpha chapter of Delta Sigma Theta (DST).

Prior to the start of the 2008 Homecoming football game between the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, October 25, 2008 current and former members of the Xi Alpha (Georgia Tech) Chapter of Delta Sorority, Inc. Sigma Theta joined other Georgia Tech alumni across the campus grounds.

The annual tradition of several of the Georgia Tech African-American organizations conducting a joint tailgating event at a common location was maintained just prior to the homecoming football game was maintained.

Members of Georgia Tech organizations including fraternities and sororities like Delta Sigma Theta (DST) took great pride in wearing paraphernalia that showcase their organization during homecoming activities.

A large audience watched in anticipation to see how well younger "new school" DST mentees learned from their older sorors. The stage for a challenge between "new-school" versus "old-school" line steppers. In a forum on the front lawn of the Georgia Tech Student Center a royal battle was about to begin.

How well did the "new-school" steppers learn their traditions and heritage? Would the experienced sorors be upstaged by their understudies?

The results were in full view for the world to see.....

The first DST group to perform were a subgroup of current Xi Alpha (Georgia Tech) DST sorors representing the "new-school" steppers!!!!

After the applause subsided for the younger DST soror, it was time for the "old-school" DST to show their stuff. The audience had to know if experienced DST sorors were competitive, contemporary, and relevant.

The step-show ended with plenty of mutual love, respect, admiration, and "sisterly" affection. DST pride wih a distinctive Xi Alpha (Georgia Tech) flavor was display that day for the general public to witmness. Hopefully, all of us will soon see the next generational DST- Xi Alpha Chapter rematch. While some of the faces of the dancers may change, this rich legacy forever endures.

Xi Alpha members commemorated the thirtieth anniversary of Delta Sigma Theta (DST) Sorority Inc. on the Georgia Tech campus with a dinner after the 2008 Homecoming football game.

Tributes were given to the initial nine Xi Alpha members who constituted the Xi Alpha charter line. A service award was given to Mrs. Simone Mortin for her service, dedication, and commitment to the community and Xi Alpha chaper.

Mrs. Morton also holds the distinction of being a former Georgia Tech Homecoming Queen.

The audience watched film tributes which promoted continued community service and highlighted the various pledge lines over the existance of the DST Xi Alpha Chapter especially the initial chapter members.

Xi Alpha members were introduced however in a reverse order starting with current, student members to sorors with the highest number of years of service.

After Xi Alpha Chapter members were introduced, they were joined in solidarity with some of their other DST sorors to engage in traditional song.

The festive mood continued with opportunities for bonding moments among dear friends who reminesced and reconnected.

One of the grand finales for Homecoming 2008 was held the next day during a 30th "Pearl" Anniversary Worship Service on Sunday, October 26, 2008. DST sorors and their guests were provided a religious program accompanied with refresments in the Georgia Tech Student Center Theatre. Soror Jennifer Alford-Hall provided the call to worship, while the current Xi Alpha Chapter President, Soror Sharece Hall provided the welcome remarks.

Gospel selections were performed by G.I.F.T.E.D., a Georgia Tech student organization.

The worship service continued with a scriptural reading from Soror Sabrina McCorvey.

Soror Cassandra Johnson recited a poem while Soror Brittany Butler performed a dance selection with the GIFTED dance component.

The keynote speaker was Soror Sybrina Atwaters, who was jointly introduced by Soror Tracey Needham and Ms. Atwaters' daughter.

Tokens of appreciation were presented to the Anniversary Committee for organizing the preogram.

The conclusion to the worship service was led with a benediction from Soror Sybrina Atwaters. After the conclusion of the worship service, Xi Alpha Chapter members had a final opportunity to mingle during their thirteith anniversary.
